Better Speech & Hearing Month and Therapy Appreciation Day
May is a month that invites us to pause and celebrate something fundamental: the power of communication, and the dedicated people who work every day to support it. At Pacekids, we are honouring both Better Speech and Hearing Month and Therapy Appreciation Day this May, and the two feel deeply connected. One reminds us why communication matters; the other reminds us who shows up to champion it.
To our therapy team: thank you. The work you do, the relationships you build, the progress you celebrate, the creativity you bring, makes a meaningful difference in the lives of the children and families we serve together.
Happy Better Speech and Hearing Month, and Happy Therapy Appreciation Day.
Better Speech & Hearing Month
May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, a national awareness campaign led by Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC). This year’s theme, “Access Changes Everything,” speaks directly to something we witness at Pacekids every single day. Timely, equitable, and culturally safe access to communication health services can be genuinely transformative for children and their families.
Roughly 1 in 10 Canadians experiences a communication disorder, something that can significantly affect physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Communication is not only an essential part of everyday living; it is at the heart of how children build connections, understand the world, and develop a sense of self. Children and families thrive through the meaningful relationships that take shape across a lifetime, and strong communication skills are foundational to that.
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play a central role in supporting those connections. At Pacekids, our SLPs work alongside children and families to introduce augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), create meaningful communication opportunities, and develop skills that support the expression of needs, wants, and ideas. These tools and strategies strengthen connections, helping children interact with their peers, educators, and families in ways that feel authentic and empowering.
Access to communication health services looks different for every family. Cultural understanding, community context, and inclusive approaches are essential to ensuring that all children and families feel genuinely supported. Supporting culturally safe, community-informed care strengthens not only communication, but also the sharing of language and knowledge across generations.

Therapy Appreciation Day
Therapy Appreciation Day takes place on Sunday, May 31, 2026, and at Pacekids, we will be celebrating our incredible therapy team on Monday, June 1 and Tuesday, June 2.
Across speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, and therapy support roles, our team brings compassion, creativity, collaboration, and expertise to every interaction. They are the reason that Better Speech and Hearing Month resonates so personally for us: we see their work and its impact up close, every day.
Therapy is about far more than goals and sessions. It is about building relationships, supporting participation in everyday experiences, celebrating progress, and helping children feel confident, connected, and successful in their environments at home, at school, and in the community. Our therapy team works closely with families, educators, aides, and community partners to provide meaningful, child-centered support that meets each child and family exactly where they are.
We are continually inspired by the resilience, joy, determination, and individuality of the children and families we work alongside. And we are endlessly grateful to the families who trust us to be part of their journey.
