Program Unit Funding, or ‘PUF’ is educationally focused funding available to children in Alberta between 2 years, 8 months, and 6 years of age. Parents do not have to apply for funding, school authorities will access this funding on family’s behalf. The goal is to provide early intervention services to students across the province, in the hopes of providing a successful transition into their early elementary years.
To enroll a child in PUF programming, parents must present documentation indicating that their child has a medical diagnosis impacting their development, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Global Developmental Delay, or Cerebral Palsy. Children can also qualify for PUF by providing a report from a qualified therapist indicating severe delays in key developmental areas, such as speech and language.
PUF programming is available for a maximum of three years through a Private ECS Operator, such as Pacekids. The third and final year of PUF must be utilized during a child’s Kindergarten year. PUF funding is available for a maximum of two years through a community-based program (i.e. Calgary Board of Education). In the Kindergarten year with a Community-based program, a Specialized Learning Support grant may be available to support your child.
